What does AS 4072.1 mean for service penetrations?

Short answer

AS 1530.4 is the fire test. AS 4072.1 is the standard that governs how a test result is applied — the materials, components and methods used to protect service penetrations and control joints in elements required to have an FRL, and the conditions under which a tested prototype can be relied on for the thing actually built. It is the link between a test report in a folder and a hole in a wall.

What changes the answer

  • the project-applicable NCC edition
  • the edition of AS 4072.1 the project references
  • the AS 1530.4 test evidence behind the system
  • how the proposed condition differs from the tested prototype
  • the report or assessment supporting any permitted variation.

What to do next

Do not treat the standard number as a substitute for the system evidence. For a live project, work from the project documents and the report supporting the actual detail.

General information only. A conclusion about a specific condition requires the actual construction, the evidence behind it and the site condition to be reviewed.
