What does AS 1905.1 mean for fire doors?

Short answer

AS 1530.4 is the fire test. AS 1905.1 is the standard that governs the doorset itself — how a fire-resistant doorset is constructed, identified and installed into the surrounding construction. Once the building is in service, routine inspection and maintenance of fire and smoke doors is AS 1851. The door is not the leaf. It is the leaf, the frame, the hardware, the seals, any glazing and the fixing into the wall, tested together and relied on together.

What changes the answer

  • the project-applicable NCC edition
  • the edition of AS 1905.1 the project references
  • the AS 1530.4 test evidence behind the doorset
  • whether the doorset was tested as a single or double leaf, and in which direction it swings
  • the construction it is installed into — the doorset was tested in a nominated supporting construction, and the evidence sets what else it may be installed into
  • every item of hardware fitted to it, including anything added later.

What to check on site

  • the identification on the doorset, photographed square-on and recorded in full
  • that the evidence describes the assembly actually installed, not a similar one
  • the frame fixing and the making good around it, which the tested detail specifies and which decides whether the assembly matches its evidence
  • the clearances around the leaf, and that the door closes and latches unassisted
  • any drilling, cutting, locks, vision panels or closers added after installation.

What to do next

Treat the doorset as one assembly rather than a set of parts. If something has been added to it or cut into it since it was installed, that is an evidence question before it is a repair question — ask what supports the doorset as it now stands.

General information only. A conclusion about a specific condition requires the actual construction, the evidence behind it and the site condition to be reviewed.
