Fire doors · Seals and components
Do fire doors need seals?
It depends on the doorset and the project requirement. Different seals do different jobs, and a missing or damaged seal cannot be assessed properly without knowing what the doorset was designed to use.
What changes the answer
- fire-door versus smoke-door requirement
- door system
- seal type and location
- pair or single leaf
- frame profile
- door hardware
- the project fire and smoke strategy.
What to check on site
- photograph the seal full height
- photograph corners and meeting stiles
- identify missing or painted-over sections
- check tag and system information
- do not substitute a generic seal because it fits the groove.
What to do next
We can identify what is needed to select a supported replacement, or whether further system evidence is required first.
General information only. A conclusion about a specific condition requires the actual construction, the evidence behind it and the site condition to be reviewed.
